burdened or distinguished by the fact that he is the grandson of anton kolig, cornelius kolig was confronted with an artistic challenge that is different from that of his grandfather.
from the outset he was fascinated by technical and technological aspects, but also by the broad-ranging sensuality of the actionist approch. it is interesting that kolig’s exploration of body secretions, urine and excrement is combined with technical apparatus. kant still applied harsh value judgments and differentiations to smell.
there were the beautiful fragrances of the apollonian, the spiritual, the redemptive sphere that were appreciated in aesthetic and ethical terms. in contrast there were the smells of the lower body, the carnal, the rankness, the stench of defecation. it was only through baudelaire, edgar allan poe, naturalism and, later, expressionism, that the smells regarded with contempt were introduced into poetry. it was called a dunk-heap perspective. in my work i am always at pains to use my art to grasp and feel total sensuality down to the depth of the tragic, of sickness, of death.
kolig confronted a similar task. an analytically sensual approach led him back to the taboos. he subtly challenged the taboos of our civilisation and education. grotesque efforts are expended; the “ugly” is torn out from its repression and brought into awareness for aesthetics, for the form.
he also constantly touches upon religious taboos and links them to the sexual and the ‘unappetising’. ritual and cult are integrated into his work in an unusual manner. he struggles for broad, new cosmic form of awareness that has nothing in common with blasphemy and the desecration of domains of holiness and modesty. in my opinion, kolig is one of the few artists who, apart from beuys and my own work, offers a comprehensive philosophical approach vis-à-vis all of existence. he pursues a stubborn struggle against isolation and a loss of orientation amidst the narrow-mindedness of southern austria.
if i understood the idea behind his ‘paradies’ (paradise) correctly, it is about bridging the gap between immanence and transcendence. metaphysics is a steady urge and stirring of whatever lives within the entire world that surrounds and has meaning for us. everything is what it is; we should burst through to the reality of being and the resulting enlightenment. metaphysics cannot be understood across a boundary between this world and the next; it is the fundamental creative process...

cornelius kolig, belastet oder ausgezeichnet durch die tatsache, der enkel von anton kolig zu sein, ist in eine andere künstlerische problematik als sein großvater hineingestellt.
ihn faszinierte von anfang an das technische, das technologische, aber auch die breite sinnlichkeit des aktionistischen. interessant ist, dass bei kolig die auseinandersetzung mit körpersekreten, urin und stuhlgang mit technologischen apparaten verbunden wird.
noch kant unterschied streng und wertend zwischen gerüchen. es gab die wohlgerüche der apollinischen, der geistigen, der erlösungssphäre, die ästhetisch und ethisch gewertet wurden. im gegensatz dazu standen die gerüche des unterleblichen, des körperlichen, des gestanks, der fäulnis, des stuhlgangs. erst durch baudelaire, e. a. poe, den naturalismus und später den expressionismus wurden die sogenannten verpönten gerüche in die dichtung eingeführt, man sprach von einer misthaufenperspektive. mir geht es in meiner arbeit immer darum, mit meiner kunst die totale sinnlichkeit bis in die abgründe des tragischen, der krankheit, des todes zu begreifen und zu empfinden.
kolig stellte sich eine ähnliche aufgabe. ein analytisch-sinnlicher zugriff ließ ihn bis zu den tabus zurückgehen. er rüttelte subtil an den tabus unserer zivilisation und erziehung. ein grotesker aufwand wird getrieben, das „hässliche“ wird aus seiner verdrängung gerissen, für die ästhetik, für die form bewusst gemacht.
auch die religiösen tabus werden von ihm ständig berührt und mit dem sexuellen und „unappetitlichen“ in verbindung gebracht. ritual und kult sind ebenfalls in gewohnter weise in seine arbeit eingebunden. hier wird um eine weite neue kosmische bewusstseinsform gekämpft, die nicht mit blasphemie und schändung von heiligen bereichen und bereichen der scham zu tun hat. kolig ist für mich einer der wenigen künstler, die neben beuys und mir eine umfassende philosophie über das ganze des eins anbieten. er kämpft
zäh im engstirnigen süden österreichs gegen vereinzelung und orientierungslosigkeit.
habe ich den gedanken seines „paradieses“ richtig verstanden, geht es ihm darum, die trennung zwischen immanenz und transzendenz aufzuheben. die metaphysik ist ein ständiges drängen und wirken des lebendigen in der ganzen und bedeutenden und umgebenden welt. alles ist, wie es ist, es soll durchgedrungen werden zur wirklichkeit desseins und der dadruch bewirkten erleuchtung. die metaphysik ist nicht über eine grenze von diesseits und jenseits zu begreifen, sie ist der schlechthin grundsätzliche schöpferische vorgang...
