Hans Schließmann, painter and draughtsman, b. Mainz, Feb 6, 1852, d. Vienna Feb 14, 1920, from 1866 education at the Xylographische Anstalt R. von Waldheim in Vienna. Later on contributor to the magazines 'Humoristische Blätter', 'Kikeriki' und 'Fliegende Blätter'. His illustrations show vernacular scenes from Vienna, he painted glasses using a range of techniques. Thanks to his education at R. von Waldheim he mastered the technique of calking. For some of his glasses, the contours of the depictions were first applied by calking and then painted with transparent enamel colours. His 'Schattenriss-Silhouettenmalereien' [silhouette paintings] were executed without calking in black enamel painting. Renowned persons from the world of the arts, politics or from daily life were models for his caricatures. His main productive period was in the years 1880–1910. Some glasses are marked with the company mark of the Viennese glass trader E. Bakalowits and sons on the stand.
