Johann Franz Schwanthaler (Ried 1683-1762), Madonna and Child,
enthroned before clouds, Upper Austria, circa 1720- 40, carved limewood, flattened to rear, polychrome paintwork and gilding, some lustre paint, height 57 cm, right hand of the Madonna replaced, two fingers from her left hand and one of the Child’s fingers missing, age damage and losses to paint, (MC)
Johann Franz Schwanthaler (Ried 1683-1762), son of Thomas Schwanthaler, took over his father’s sculpture workshop in 1711. Amongst his verified works is the tabernacle and pulpit at Waldzell, dated 1721, several sculptures at Hohenzell (Annunciation, sculpture for the tabernacle, St George, St Michael), the side altarpieces at Lohnsburg, and the high altarpiece at Lengau, dated 1755.
