French Napoleon III sideboard,
Known as a Commode a la porte, 3rd quarter of the 19th century, signed on the lockplate "Grade rue de la Paix 23 Paris" (Louis Grade, active 1852 - 1867). An ebonised cabinet, the front decorated with boulle marquetry in tortoiseshell and engraved brass, also with bronze doré relief mouldings, the canted angles with figures of putti, 2 doors with medallion fronts and a marble top. Ca. 110 x 139 x 43 cm. In restored condition. (PZ)
In the department for restoration at the Fachhochschule in Hildesheim, a diploma dissertation on the subject of the restoration of tortoiseshell (“Die Problematik der Ergänzung von Schildpatt”) was based on this particular piece of furniture. Copies of this work are included.
