Richard Sebastian Zimmermann studied at the Academy in Munich and started his career as a portrait painter. He travelled to Paris, Belgium and the United Kingdom in the 1840s. He then settled back in Munich where he was known for his humoristic genre paintings, depicting the everyday Bavarian life of his contemporaries.
He was named a Baden court painter in 1862.
