Carl von Saar

Carl von Saar - Obrazy 19. století

(Vienna 1797–1853)
A floral still life, signed Carl v. Saar (incised),
oil on thick board, 47.5 x 38.5 cm, framed, (Rei)

Provenance:
Collection of Eve Newgas, neé Blumka (1924–2015), London.

Carl von Saar was a Viennese painter who was mainly known for his elegant and realist miniatures and portraits. Between 1822 and 1845 he exhibited several times at the Academy where his works showed the influence of Moritz Michael Daffinger (1790–1849) and Josef Kriehuber (1800–1876). Von Saar also painted historical paintings, probably influenced by his teacher Johann Baptist Lampi the elder (1751–1830), before moving to flower still lives at the end of his career, around 1850. The flowers and grasses in the present work show the artist‘s ability to delicately render what he was painting and his desire to stay true to nature. Still wet with the morning dew the flowers have the freshness of a newly picked bouquet. The vase with its intricate design of decorative leaves and petals seems to be a prolongation of the flower arrangement itself making the present work a harmonious ornamental composition.
