In this work, Friedrich August von Kaulbach depicts the nephew of Mina Kaulbach, Friedrich Kaulbach’s first wife and the artist’s foster child. Little Liese (“Lieschen”) was portrayed by him on several occasions. Kaulbach was known, along with Franz von Stuck (1863–1928) and Franz von Lenbach (1836–1904), as one of the most significant Munich painters of his time. Trained by his father, amongst others, Friedrich Kaulbach devoted himself, particularly later on, to portraits of ladies in the fashion of Parisian Salon painting. His particular talent lay in rendering his subject in a thoroughgoing realistic manner. Even during his lifetime, Kaulbach was honourably named the “Prince of Painting”. His attitude towards painting, however, was determined by a style committed to tradition, taking little pleasure in innovation.
