Jan Tricius (also Tretko or Tricjust) studied with Jacob Jordaens in Antwerp, Nicolas Poussin in Paris (1640–42) and in Gdansk, all cited in the privilege granted to him by King John III Sobieski on the artist’s appointment as court painter in Cracow (see Jan K. Ostrowski, Mechanisms of Contact between Polish and European Baroque, in: Land of the Winged Horsemen: Art in Poland, 1572–1764, Yale 1999, p. 63).
