We are grateful to Klaus Ertz for confirming the attribution of the present painting after its examination in the original (certificate of February 2015).
Frans Wouters was one of the most important collaborators of Peter Paul Rubens. His work translates the latter’s monumental Baroque style into the smaller format of cabinet painting. For the present painting, Wouters relied on a composition by his master Rubens (Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister, Dresden), so it can be assumed that the painting dates from a time when the artist was still present in Rubens’s workshop.
