Oceania, Samoa: a large piece of bark bast, called ‘tapa’, with painted flowers and blossoms.
A very large piece of bark bast ‘tapa’ (cf. the more detailed explanation in cat. no. 205). The central surface of the ‘tapa’ is painted dark brown (with plant pigments) up until the two light and almost white ‘natural’ coloured trims on the sides. Arranged negatively in a pattern on this dark surface (likely through the use of stencils) are big blossoms and plants). A more modern piece, with minor damage. Length: c. 388 cm; Width: c. 242 cm. C. Mid-20th century. (ME)
