A big rice scoop as used in Burma at ceremonies and celebrations in monasteries and temples to give out cooked rice to the monks and abbots. Carved out of a piece of hard wood, it is decorated with volutes and linear chip-carving, then coated with black varnish and painted with red lacquer on top. Continuously and artfully carved from the same piece of wood, at the end of the strong, curved grip is a very naturalistically sculpted elephant! An original, splendid object, with clearly visible, old and 'worn' usage patina (at the bottom and on the grip). Obtained from the consignor in the vicinity of the Pindaya Caves in the province of Shan (East Burma). Length: 60.5 cm; Width: 16 cm. First half of the 20th century. (ME)
Provenance:
Private Collection, Vienna.
