The Lobi, in the south-west of Burkina Faso, make use of stools and such recliners as seating (see also cat. no 136). The present Lobi recliner is an example of the characteristic type: stood on three strong thick legs continuously carved from a tree trunk. The individual front support is shaped like a foot. Through sideway ‘pinches’, the pleasantly curved surface of the recliner forms a head at its upper end. The front support has been previously broken and has been glued (an original repair with tree resin and sand as well as fixating metal plates made of sheet iron). A few material and age related tears. Otherwise no damage. A very typical object of the Lobi, with very good, shiny usage patina. Height: 68 cm (at the 'head'), 30 cm (at the foot), width: 30 cm (resting surface). First half of the 20th century. (ME)
Provenance:
Austrian Private Collection.
Lit.:
'Afrikanische Sitze' by Sandro Bocola, ill. 26; 'Man and his Vision. The Traditional Wood Sculpture Of Burkina Faso' by Esther A. Dagan, ill. 144.
