A lidded box for spices of the Rotse in the upper reaches of the Zambezi river. Carved from hard brown wood and originally black-dyed. Rubbed off as a result of protracted use. The oval bowl sits on a continuously carved round stand underneath. The lid shows the elegantly abstracted form of a duck swimming in water. Only limited age-related damage (a glued tear in the lid, colour wear on the outside). A very original object with great age patina as a result of the object’s long use as a condiments container (see the inner bottom of the bowl). Height: 12 cm; Width: 17 cm; Length: 25 cm. First third of the 20th century. (ME)
