An African prestige axe adorned with decorative nails.
Prestige axes in this form come from West Africa. The present example originates from the Pende consignors in the Congo. The axe displays a short, blunt iron blade with a sheath, that is rounded on the front and locally forged and attached with knee-shaft hafting. The shaft, made from hard, brown wood, displays a ‘knee’ - a spherical crest carved out from the same piece - and is, for the most part, decorated in dense long rows of brass nails. There is an age-related crack on the shaft, beneath the ‘sphere head’. Overall the mask has a good, old, partly shiny usage patina. Such prestige axes were neither weapons nor tools, rather they were carried over the shoulders of local dignitaries. Length: 53 cm (total). First half of the 20th century. (ME)
