Senufo, Ivory Coast, Mali, Burkina Faso: a seated female figure called ‘Tugubele’.
These small, male and female figures represent bush spirits, just like the small sculptures also called ‘Tugubele’. These figures are the personal property of Senufo soothsayers who require them, as ‘helpers’, for the creation of their oracle.
The present, female ‘Tugubele figure’ is, together with the stool on which she is sitting, carved from light-coloured, lightweight wood. She has a typical Senufo combed hairstyle and small braid behind. She also has protruding ears and characteristically protuberant open mouth with teeth. She displays scarification marks on both cheeks and on both upper arms on the front and back, as well as bracelets. The entire, female ‘Tugubele’ is black and the stool on which she sits is dyed a reddish brown. A perfect, old Senufo figure of this type with no significant damage (one of the legs of the stool has been broken and glued back on). Height: 36 cm (with stool). First half of the 20th century.
Provenance:
Kegel-Konietzko Collection, Hamburg; currently: German private collection.
Lit.:
'Die Kunst der Senufo' by Hans-Joachim Koloß, Museum für Völkerkunde, Berlin, ill. 15, 18.
