Dogon, Mali: a very old ‘tree ladder’ used for climbing into the millet granary, as well as climbing the mud walls in and around the villages. - Mimoevropské a domorodé umění

In the Bandiagara mountains in the east of Mali ‘tree ladders’, such as this one, were used to climb the mud walls within the villages that separated individual homes. They were also used to reach the elevated doors of the millet granaries.
The present ‘tree ladder’ is made from the hard wood of a single tree trunk, in a style typical of the Dogon, with a forked open end. It has 6 deeply grooved steps that have been evidently used for decades. There are also small miniature ladders that are used as sacred objects on the Dogon altars (see cat. no. 13).
The present, large ‘tree ladder’ is a perfect, highly decorative object with an impressive and very old shiny, usage patina. No damage. Height: 192 cm; width: 62 cm (at the top end of the fork), otherwise: c. 20 cm. Between c. 1900 and the first half of the 20th century. (ME)
