We are also grateful to Johann Kronbichler for confirming the attribution on the basis of a high resolution digital photograph.
The present composition is an allegory of Minerva (Athena) supporting the study of arts against its enemies. Wagenschön depicted the theme in 1770, which granted him official membership at the k.k. Akademie der bildenden Künste in Vienna. The present painting can therefore either be the missing admission painting for the Akademie or a fully autograph replica.
