We are grateful to Lino Moretti for confirming the authenticity of the present painting.
Domenico Maggiotto was trained by Giovanni Battista Piazzetta in Venice and worked as his master’s assistant until Piazzetta’s death in 1754. His works executed between 1730 and 1750 are consequently distinctly influenced by Piazzetta’s expressive manner of painting, with genre scenes prevailing. A characteristic example of his art is the Flute Player from 1745 in the Ca’ Rezzonico in Venice. The artist’s penchant for voluminous forms and preference for chiaroscuro effects likewise suggest Piazzetta’s impact. After the death of his master, a certain disorientation made itself felt in Maggiotto’s art that subsequently gave way to a rather arbitrary eclecticism. It was probably through his friendship with Giuseppe Nogari that he began to intensively study Rembrandt’s work in his mature phase. Inspired by Dutch tronies, he eventually developed a highly idiosyncratic style of which the present painting is a fascinating example.
