Jan van Kessel I

Jan van Kessel I - Obrazy starých mistrů

(Antwerp 1626–1679)
A still life of fish on a beach, with a seal and an otter,
signed lower right: J. V. KESSEL,
oil on copper, 19.5 x 23.5 cm, framed

We are grateful to Klaus Ertz for confirming the authenticity of the present painting. A certificate, dated 13 January 2014, is available.

Ertz dates the present painting to the period around 1660. In those years, Jan van Kessel painted a series of beach scenes in a very similar manner (see K. Ertz/Ch. Nitze-Ertz, Die Maler Jan van Kessel, Lingen, 2012, pp. 233–235,). In his monograph on Kessel, Ertz writes: ‘A motif extremely popular among contemporaries must have been the food intake of animals, an entirely natural process […]. In the years between 1660 and 1663 the artist painted coastal landscapes filled with dead ocean creatures in the foreground that are eaten either solely by seals or by seals and otters.’

Ertz interprets these coastal scenes as Allegories of Water, while Kessel’s Bird Concerts may probably be seen as their pendants – as Allegories of Air. Ertz writes: ‘In the art of Jan van Kessel I, one must always also consider that he had an allegory in mind.’
