Bijlert had specialised in depictions of half-length figures of shepherds and shepherdesses. The present painting is a characteristic example of the art of Utrecht Caravaggism. It dates from the period around 1625/30 and was thus painted immediately after Van Bijlert’s return from Italy. The artist made use of Caravaggio’s chiaroscuro, produced by a refined handling of light.
