Central Italian School, late 14th Century

Central Italian School, late 14th Century - Obrazy starých mistrů

Crucifixion, with the Madonna, Saint Mary Magdalen, Saint Lucy, Saint John the Evangelist and Saint Anthony the Abbot,
tempera on panel, 75 x 47 cm, unframed

Literature:
F. Zeri and M. Lucco, Andrea di Giovanni, in: I. Consigli (ed.), Opere d’Arte da una Collezione Privata, Parma 1993, pp. 33-35 (as Andrea di Giovanni – private publication)

The crucified Christ stands out against a uniform black background, nailed to a cross of rough wood and surrounded by four angels in flight, one of whom collects the blood spurting from the wound in Christ´s ribs in a cup. Beneath, Mary Magdalene is on her knees, embracing the lower part of the cross raised on Golgotha, marked by the blood of the Saviour. On either side are shown the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Evangelist, with Saint Lucy to the left and Saint Anthony the Abbot on the right.

Formerly attributed to an unknown Lombard painter by Mina Gregori and subsequently to Andrea di Giovanni (see literature), the present painting, which is extremely interesting for its formal presentation, is more typical, however, of the manner of artists working in Tuscany and Umbria around the middle to late fourteenth century, influenced by the oeuvre of Giotto.

Alessandro Tomei has recently suggested an alternative attribution to the Master of the Tempere Francescane (Pietro Orimina?) (active in Naples circa 1330–1345).
