porcelain, body with gilt and brown rim, gilt-painted impasto rosettes, vases with leaf tendrils flanked by laurel stems on a white ground, encompassed by gilt arched and shabraque frieze on a chamois-coloured ground, neck with burnished and matt gilt rims, burnished gilt well with oval reserve, within which polychrome-painted landscape and the ‘Rape of Ganymede’ after Correggio, below which barking dog, framed by burnished gilt border on a matt-gilt band, to the centre signed L. Herr, Ø 25 cm, gilt ground slightly rubbed, Vienna Imperial Manufactory, underglaze blue shield mark, date mark 1805, Sorgenthal era, turner no. 32 Silvester Gurber 1804-1820 (Ru)
Lorenz (Laurenz) Herr, son of Johann Herr and brother of Claudius Herr, figure painter at the Manufactory, born Vienna 1787, history, landscape and portrait painter, 1804-1828 and later at the Viennese Manufactory. Entered the Viennese Academy at the age of 12 and won 3 Gundel awards, from 1804 at the Manufactory until 1810 painted in an antiquising style, including dinner plates depicting Aristagoras and Cleomenes, Nessus and Dejanira, Achilles and Chiron, 1812, dinner services, plates, and smaller items with figural representations, later portraits such as of Emperor Franz, Empress Carolina, Empress Maire-Luise, the Duke of Reichstadt, numerous regent portraits from the Habsburg dynasty, the family of Lord Gordon, during the Congress era of the European monarchies, princes, princesses, generals and statesmen, his speciality being the imitation of ancient onyx cameos, after the originals in the Imperial Cabinet of Antiquities, such as the ‘Gemma Augustea’. In the ledger of the Manufactory, his works dating from 1806-1831 and 1833 are listed. He was awarded prestigious prizes for his work. Founded a lithographical works in 1819/1820, which existed until 1835. On 10.12.1831 ‘the Empress ordered a dish with the portraits of Archduke Franz. When requested to come to the Manufactory, Lorenz Herr failed to appear.’
