Anton Koberger
(Nuremberg c. 1440-1513) and Heinrich Quentell (born in Straßburg, active in Cologne c. 1478-1501) A set of four woodcuts with illustrations for the German bible, edition Anton Koberger, Nuremberg 1483, coloured impressions from the block of the Cologne Bible, edition Heinrich Quentell (1479-1480): Agony in the Garden, Ressurection of Christ, Pentecost, Abraham and David, woodcuts on laid paper, bible texts on the reverse, old colored, each approx. 12 x 18,5 cm, mounted, framed, (4), (Sch)
Literature: comp. Walter Eichenberger and Henning Wendland, Deutsche Bibeln vor Luther, Berlin 1980, p. 91 ff; Albert Schramm, Kommission für den Gesamtkatalog der Wiegendrucke (Commission for the catalogue raisonné of incunables), Der Bilderschmuck der Frühdrucke, 23 Vols., Vol. VIII, Leipzig 1920-1940.
Very excellent, clear, and strong impressions with bright colors, in an excellent condition.
The present illustrations derive from a copy of the famous "Biblia germanica", which was the ninth German Bible by Anton Koberger. He created it on the basis of the wood blocks of the Low German bible by Heinrich Quentell in 1478. Until far into the 16th century the illustrations had an impact on following generations of artists in Germany and Italy, among them Albrecht Dürer.
