Orendi hand knotted carpet,
Maffersdorf (Czech Republic/Austria), c. 590 x 435 cm, about 1910, the C. Genersich & Orendi carpet trading company ran a shop in Vienna’s historical centre and also had its own carpet production in Maffersdorf during the Hapsburg monarchy: most of its carpets were exported to London and Paris, and it also created the then largest hand knotted carpet in the world for the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York in 1924; with symmetrical knots in coarse knotting, the present carpet is heavily damaged with partly low and bare pile areas and would have to be restored, the design is inspired by the Northwest Persian tree carpets from the same period, with knotted signature “Orendi” on the reverse.
