A skirt and an overskirt, China, late 19th cent.
a) Skirt made of multi-coloured, embroidered strips of silk. The main panel to front and rear both in red silk damask, partly pleated, colourfully embroidered in satin stitch with bats, butterflies and flowers. Adjustable waistband in pink cotton (possibly extended). Some spotting, stains in places, traces of wear. Length: 94 cm.
b) Overskirt, consisting of 24 colourful satin strips fixed to a linen waistband, 22 of them of varying sizes, embroidered to both sides with flowers in satin stitch, two of the strips wider, lined and embroidered to one side, respectively, with a dragon or a phoenix above rocks awash with waves, in French knots, satin stitch and threads of gold wire in couched work. One narrow strip missing. Repair to lining; Traces of wear. Length: 94 cm. (BA)
Han-Chinese women wore overskirts of this kind over their skirts at festivals.
