A sandstone fragment depicting three Jina (‘tritirthika’). India, c. 10th cent.
Seated naked and meditating in the lotus position, one of the 24 Tirthankara, also known as Jina (victor), framed by two columns, his hands in dhynamudra, on his chest the shrivatsa symbol; set back behind him somewhat his naked attendants, standing in kyotsarga, also representing Jina. To the extreme right, a goddess in tribhanga, who probably represents Saraswati. The Jina are the highest-ranking holy figures in the Jain religion. Two parts broken away and reaffixed. Height: 30 cm; width: approx. 35 cm, depth: approx. 16.5 cm. Metal base. (BA)
