A rare chair, Bernhard Hoetger,
manufactured at the “Werkstatt der Sieben Faulen” in Böttgerstraße in Bremen, Germany, c. 1925, dark stained solid oak, carved armrests, height 72 cm, width 59 cm, depth 63 cm, height of seat 40 cm. (DRAX)
A unique specimen.
Original condition.
A variant of the chair featuring a woven rush seat made for the house of Paula Moderson-Becker in Bremen. This chair has a slatted back and is decorated with the abstract and stylised carved ornament typical of Hoetger and his manufacturing workshop. This is an extremely early specimen that was probably made for the “Große Kunstschau” exhibition at Worpswede in 1925; a simplified model without carved ornament was used for the house of Paula Modersohn-Becker. The chair was manufactured either by Fred Ehlers or Friedrich Schanze, cabinetmakers in the “Werkstatt der Sieben Faulen” [“Workshop of the Seven Idlers”] .
