Germany, 1977, coated polyester, signed: LColani, length 150 cm, height 35 cm, width 24 cm. (DRAX)
This model is Colani’s first truck design, which was realised on the basis of a Fiat platform. Originally it was planned that the driver’s cabin should instantly bounce up upon impact so that the driver would not be jammed. Thanks to its aerodynamic form, this vehicle would have consumed considerably less fuel than conventional trucks. All of Colani’s later trucks, including the modified versions of recent years, were based on Mercedes platforms. Automobile design had been a constant issue in Luigi Colani’s career from 1954 on. Over the decades he made numerous futuristic sketches, models, and prototypes of cars, planes, and spaceships and developed visionary traffic concepts envisaging duct systems.
Provenance: private collection, Cologne, Germany, acquired from Luigi Colani.
