Naga, India, Burma (Myanmar): a women’s necklace of the Konyak Naga, who live in Nagaland, India and on the other side of the border with Burma.
An eleven-stranded necklace. Made of elongated red, dark brown and small light blue glass beads. The lowest stand is a string of round black glass beads covered in white dots. Hanging from this lower stand are 27 metal bells made of yellow cast-alloy (brass) using ‘waste mould’ casting. All the glass beads used are of an older variety. The eleven stands of the necklace are held in place by six ‘straddles’ made of bone. The closure consists of a small white square plate made of cut and polished sea snail shell. This type of necklace was chiefly worn by Konyak Naga women and girls. L: c. 56 cm. Between the 19th century and the first third of the 20th century. (ME)
