Naga, India, Burma: A warrior’s loincloth, richly covered in cowrie shells.
An old loincloth of a warrior of the Naga (see also cat. no. 170). Made of handwoven cotton and densely covered in cowrie shells. Cowries were used by the Naga for decoration, often polished on both sides, pierced, and sewn to the background. And so they are used in this loincloth — arranged one next to the other in dense rows on the two pieces of fabric that form the loincloth; arranged also in ‘cross-stitch’ along one of the rims on both sides. Only minor age-related damage (three missing cowrie shells). H: 50 cm (in total), c. 40 cm (cloth only). 18 cm. First third of the 20th century. (ME)
Provenance: Austrian Private Collection.
