India: A very old sculpture of a horse: made of wood, painted. Originating either in Rajasthan or Gujarat. 19th century. - Mimoevropské a domorodé umění

An unusually large, old wooden horse. Carved in pieces, assembled and painstakingly painted white, red, yellow and black. With a saddle, saddle cover, bridles and ornaments over the black-painted mane. Horse sculptures, such as the present one, either served to carry the sculptures of local protective gods presented in a riding pose and also carved from painted wood, or the figures of kings (rajas). Alternatively, as separate individual sculptures, they were used as children’s toys in noble families. The present Indian horse is visibly very old. The stallion presents with a few age-related tears, scuffing, broken and worn off parts, defects in the paint and chipped edges. A small, old original repair can be found (glued) on the right hind flank. H: 60 cm, L: 68 cm. 19th century or earlier. (ME)

Provenance: Austrian Private Collection.

Lit.: ‘Aditi. Creation. Celebration’, ‘Festival of India’ catalogue, Barbican Center, London, 1982; coloured ill. 29, p. 116.
