India: An old wooden sculpture of the dancing god Vishnu — from a temple or religious vehicle in South India.

India: An old wooden sculpture of the dancing god Vishnu — from a temple or religious vehicle in South India. - Mimoevropské a domorodé umění

Carved in relief, worked sculpturally and largely three-dimensionally from hard wood. The four-armed Hindu god Vishnu (‘the Protector’) is represented in dancing pose, with his attributes around him: the shell trumpet (upper right), the wheel (upper left) and the club (lower right). Vishnu’s fourth attribute, a lotus flower, has been broken off. Placed watchfully above the divinely crowned, richly ornamented Hindu deity is a well-wishing guardian angel called ‘Yalli’ or ‘Kirtimukha’. A small mythical lion, ‘Singha’, stands between the legs of the deity. A wooden sculpture with distinctly noticeable age and weathering damage (cracks). Reason for the weathering is that this sculpture has long stood exposed on the outside of a temple or a religious vehicle to the monsoon rains of South India. Dimensions: 43 x 21 x 8 cm. 19th century or earlier. (ME)

Provenance: German Private Collection.
