Chokers of this type are to be found in and around the City of Ghazni in East Afghanistan (south of Kabul). The present piece is made of weak silver-alloy — with the base plate of the middle segment made of brass — and has high copper content (see the item’s back). The ornament consists of numerous cast and partly engraved single pieces that have been soldered together. Three engraved hemispherical ‘domes’ take ‘centre-stage’. Like the leaf-like interspersed pieces and the articulated rosettes that precede the even ends of the choker, these ‘domes’ are adorned with red and green glass stones. One gemstone is missing from each rosette. Soldered together silver tabs with hemispherical ends form the lower edge of the choker and are held together by a brace made of thick silver wire. An interesting, pretty ornament, with old traces of wear (scuffing at the back). H: 19 cm, W: 20.5 cm. Between c. 1900 and the first third of the 20th century. (ME)
Provenance: German Private Collection.
Lit.: 'Schmuck in Afghanistan' by Alfred Janata, ill. 44.
