Tekke Turkmens, Afghanistan, Iran, Turkmenistan: A large, heart-shaped (dorsal) braid pendant, called ‘asik’. Made of silver, engraved and gilded, with seven carnelians. - Mimoevropské a domorodé umění

Married Tekke Turkmen women in Northwest Afghanistan, north-eastern Persia and in Turkmenistan wear two heavy braids falling loosely on the back (for unmarried girls, it is three braids). To fix their two braids together on the back, the women use such heart-shaped jewellery plates. The present ‘asik’ braid-plate is an especially beautiful example: cut from dense, heavy silver and densely engraved on the front side with the typical, ‘classical’ palmette motif. With the spaces between the engravings — ‘fire-gilded’. Ornamented with bars made of twisted, handworked silver wire, with a grommet at the end of the triangular tip and with three soldered-on eyelets as well as seven carnelian stones — of which the large central stone is evenly polished, while the remaining ones feature domed cabochon finishes. An excellent old piece with no damage. H: 29 cm, W: 16 cm. Weight: 400 g. 19th century. (ME)

Provenance: Hungarian Private Collection.

Lit.: 'Schmuck aus dem Herzen der Seidenstraße' by Johannes Kalter, ill. 104.
