A typical Arabian ‘Wahabite Jambiya’ (curved dagger or short sword), with slightly curved, elongated, double-edged blade. The blade’s middle ridge, to its very core, is covered with engraved patterns on both sides — dots, lines and volutes. What is special about this curved dagger is its hilt: the ‘counterpoint’ of smaller and larger spheres, rosettes, finely knopped rhombs, the surfaces — be they smooth or engraved with a multitude of patterns. All executed in silver of the highest quality. With a fitting wooden sheath. The lower half of this sheath is trimmed with a shiny yellow brass sheet and brass bands, all covered in finely engraved abstract geometric patterns. The upper half of the sheath wears a sleeve sewn of brown leather, which bears original repairs and some minor age-related damage (leather tears). This unusually big and old ‘Wahabite Jambiya’ is, in short, a masterpiece of Arabian weaponry and the silversmith arts. L: 58 cm (in total, dagger in sheath), 57 cm (dagger only). Weight: In total, 1080 grams. 19th century or earlier. (ME)
