The traditional wrap-dress of Berber women is a large, rectangular piece of fabric, which is wrapped around the body in such a way that two corners from the back and two corners from the front always meet above the shoulder. This is where, at the tip and at the front of the shoulders, left and right, the dress is secured with a pair of such fibulae. Moroccan fibulae are thus not only practical use objects, but also lovely jewels pointing to the local heritage of bearer. The present fibulae are not a pair, but rather individual pieces from different regions in Morocco:
1: From Kabylia, the mountainous region in eastern Morocco stretching on either side of the border with Algeria: made of silver, with soldered silver decoration. Embellished with green, blue and yellow enamel both back and front, it also has, on the front side, eleven silver hemispheres and ten larger ornaments made of red coral. Dimensions: 18 cm x 9.5 cm.
2: From the Atlas Mountains (Ait Haddidou tribe). Cast in high-quality silver with a centrally embedded decorative coral pearl. Dimensions: 16 cm x 9.5 cm. (ME)
Provenance: Hungarian Private Collection.
