Ethiopia: An old ‘Bible’ of the Ethiopian Christian Church. Handwriting on parchment. In a leather sleeve with straps.
A very old ‘Bible’ of the Ethiopian Christian Church. Parchment leaves (animal skin) inscribed with black and red in the Ethiopian script on both sides. Probably in ‘Geez’, the language of the Ethiopian Church. Bound between two book covers made of wood. On the outside of one of the covers is a flap of linearly embossed leather. The ‘Bible’ is placed in a ruddy-coloured leather sleeve that is geometrically/linearly embossed. The sleeve itself is enclosed in a slipcase made of older leather — all supported by carrier straps (with missing buckle). The slipcase shows some original repairs (stitches). Otherwise no damage. Overall, all parts of the object evince an impressive, old usage patina. Dimensions: 18 cm x 11 cm x 5.5 cm (‘Bible’ alone). About 1900 or earlier. (ME)
