Typical axe of a dignitary, probably a chief of the Chokwe people. Possessing a long forged iron blade with 2 decorative rings and hatchings. Made of hard dark brown wood, the handle displays at its upper part and at the pommel numerous small round depressions. Beautifying this ceremonial axe, small sparkling decorative nails of brass with semicircular heads previously stood inside these round holes. An object with very good, old, shiny usage patina. The decorative nails have naturally long been lost. Otherwise no damage. H: H: 39 cm (handle), W: 32 cm (crown of the handle and blade). 19th century. (ME) Provenance: On the consignor’s account, this axe comes from the estate of the heirs of Austrian Biedermeier painter Friedrich von Amerling (1803-1887).
Lit.: 'Beaute Fatale. Armes d'Afrique Centrale' by J.-M. Duvosquel & J. Deraeve, ill. 494; 'Chokwe and their Bantu Neighbours' by Jean David & Gerhard Merzeder, ill. p. 31.
