Chokwe, Angola, Zambia, Democratic Republic of Congo: A beautiful ‘mother and child figure’.

Chokwe, Angola, Zambia, Democratic Republic of Congo: A beautiful ‘mother and child figure’. - Mimoevropské a domorodé umění

A very fine and carefully worked figure of a kneeling mother, breast-feeding her child. Carved in hard, brown wood. The bodies of the mother and the child are coloured reddish-brown, while the hairstyle (or head covering) is coloured black. Cut-out motifs of circles and dots decorate the woman’s face while gentle lines run at the back. The figure of the kneeling mother is a typical Chokwe face representation: big, slit eyes, flat nose and a very sensual open mouth. The scarification marks express as wavy lines on the woman’s stomach and as tender circles on her cheeks. With her left hand she is holding the baby’s head to her left bosom, while her right hand supports the body of the child. Admittedly, a later but beautifully presented ensemble, with patina and minor age-related damage: tears on both underarms and legs, on the lower back and on the rounded base plate. None of these detracting from the effect. H: 24 cm. First half to mid-20th century. (ME)

Provenance: Belgian Private Collection.

Lit.: ‘La sculpture Tshokwe’ by Marie-Louise Bastin, ill. 103, 104; 'Chokwe and their Bantu Neighbours' by Jean David und Gerhard Merzeder, ill. 113, 116.
