Lega, Democratic Republic of Congo: A relatively large ‘Lukwakongo’ (idenity-card mask) with old usage patina.
A Lega ‘Lukwakongo mask’ from eastern Congo. Used in lieu of an identity card by members of the Bwami Society as well as, during initiations to a higher rank in the Society, as a ritual object (for a more detailed explanation cf. cat. no. 104 and cat. no. 108). Carved out of hard wood in typical Lega style and coloured black and brown: oval/round, with a heart-shaped, concave, inwardly cupped face; with an arched dotted line above the eyebrows, with a long, straight nose, coffee bean eyes, a pair of diagonal scarification marks on both cheeks; and an impressed (but not traversing) slitted mouth, together with some traces of an earlier white kaolin coating on the face. A piece possessing excellent shiny old usage patina on the front and back. Minor age damage (a tear on the chin to the right, small pieces broken off on the back edge and on the left cheek). H: 18 cm, W: 14 cm. First third of the 20th century. (ME)
