Lumbu, Gabon: A very rare mother and child figure, worn for a long time as a protective amulet.
Lumbu, Gabon: A very rare mother and child figure, worn for a long time as a protective amulet.
A mother, with her child on her back. Made out of hard, brown wood, in so-called ‘Punu-Lumbu’ style (but without the characteristic scarification marks of the Punu in her face). The woman kneels, has both hands lying on her abdomen, and carries her child on her back. Her hairstyle has two smaller plaits on both sides, and at the back a broad and energetically projecting braid. In this braid a hole has been pierced for the carrying strap. These protective amulets were worn by the Lumbu women on their bodies. The face of the figure shows accentuated eyebrows and an open mouth. On breast and abdomen the Lumbu mother has typical tribal scarification marks. A visibly very old and rare piece, with excellent, shiny patina due to being worn on the body for a long time. The hole on the end of the braid also shows signs of wear. Minor damage: a small, older break on the head of the child (an old fracture). H: 21 cm. Between c. 1900 and the first third of the 20th century. (ME)
Provenance: According to the consignor, purchased in the early 1960s in Paris; now: Austrian Private Collection.
Lit.: 'Ancestral Art of Gabon' by Louis Perrois, ill. 24, 25, 26.
