Dogon, Mali: A female ancestor figure with dark shiny patina.
A relatively small, female ancestor figure, called 'Nommo' (for a more detailed explanation cf. cat. no. 6). Carved from hard brown wood in ‘angular’ Bombou-Toro style, and originally coloured dark brown. With a crested, raised head, ‘arrow-form’ nose, semicircular ears and small mouth. With good, old, shiny patina and small, age-related damage: a crack on the head on the right side, the right arm broken at the hand (an old break) and small pieces broken off. H: 30 cm. First half of the 20th century. (ME)
