Dogon, Mali: An old, female ancestral figure.

Dogon, Mali: An old, female ancestral figure. - Mimoevropské a domorodé umění

A typical, female ancestor figure of the Dogon, called ‘Nommo’ (for more detailed explanation, see cat. no. 6). Made of hard wood, originally dyed dark brown. With a crested coiffure, in relief as a plait which runs over the forehead to an ‘arrow-like’ nose. The small eyes are finely carved, the mouth is rhomboid shaped and protrudes forwards. The ears are small and semicircular, the face is framed by relief lines and the head sits on a short, thick neck directly above the shoulders and breasts. The body is long and narrow, with accentuated navel, the arms are bent, and both hands are crossed in front of the pubic area. The short, sturdy legs (without feet) stand bent on a rounded plinth. Carved from a single piece. Style region: Bombou-Toro. Overall a perfect, stylistically very characteristic example of an old Dogon figure, with good, partly shiny usage patina. No appreciable damage. H: 34 cm. First third of the 20th century. (ME)

Provenance: Philippe Sujol Collection, Paris; Viennese Private Collection.

Lit.: ‘Dogon’ by Hélène Leloup, catalogue, Musée du Quai Branly, fig. 41, 42.
