We are grateful to Klaus Ertz for confirming the attribution of the present painting after examining it in the original (written communication, February 2015).
Frans Wouters counts among the most important collaborators of Peter Paul Rubens. In his work, Rubens’ monumental Baroque style is translated into small-scale cabinet formats. For the present painting, Wouters was influenced by a composition invented by his master Rubens (Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister, Dresden), and therefore it can be assumed that the painting was probably still executed in Rubens’ workshop.
