Joos de Momper
(Antwerp 1564–1635) and Jan Brueghel II (Antwerp 1601–1678)
A rocky river landscape with travellers
oil on panel, 52 x 77 cm, framed
We are grateful to Klaus Ertz for confirming the attribution of the present painting after examination of the original (written communication, July 2015).
Klaus Ertz identified the figure painter as Jan Brueghel the Younger (1601–1678). He writes: ‘The explicitly painterly handling of the rocks and the streaky brushstrokes in the paths and in the sky suggest that Momper’s landscape dates from a late period […] with the figures of the travellers in the right foreground by Jan Brueghel the Younger, which are in fact still closely reminiscent of the rustic staffage in the art of his father. After the latter’s death in 1625, Joss de Momper frequently worked together with his son, Jan the Younger, who had taken over his father’s workshop. As a team, these two painters produced surprisingly homogeneous pictures that appear to be by a single hand.’
Ertz dates the painting to around 1630, Joos de Momper’s late period.
