porcelain, body with iron red and gilt-painted with auspicious symbols from the Eternal Knot including pearls, coin, picture scroll and artemisia leaf, some of the 8 Treasures of the Chinese with and phoenixes, Ø 22.6 cm, Meissen, onglaze blue sword mark, circa 1730, turner’s mark X George Kittel the Elder, Pirna 1671-24.8.1748 Meissen, worked for Böttger in Dresden from 1708, model by Gottlieb Kirchner, Höroldt workshop paintwork (Ru)

Lit.: Porzellan Sammlung Dresden, Führer durch die ständige Ausstellung, p. 166, ill. The Meissen ‘Red Dragon’ service was produced for the Saxon court of August I between 1729 and 1735. It exhibits a strong Far Eastern influence. It was based on a Japanese plate with Kakiemon décor in the Royal Collection. This décor, later also termed ‘Red Court Dragon’, was reserved exclusively until 1918 for the Saxon court’s purposes.
