The Lexikon der Düsseldorfer Malerschule says of Ludwig Munthe, “Together with H.F.Gude, he retained a leading position amongst the Norwegian landscape painters in Düsseldorf. Autumn and winter landscapes are his preferred subject matter, depicted during the evening as the sun sets (...) Munthe became especially renowned for his ability to depict melting snow. His palette is subdued, the grey-brown colouring suiting the melancholy mood of his landscapes..
