France (Europe), each c. 348 x 144 cm, end of the 19th century, a pair of mirror-image woven carpets made of wool and silk, in the courtly lifestyle these earlier free-hanging tapestries would only have been fitted in the interior design, the present pieces were embedded in wall panelling and were customised on commission precisely according to size and appearance, good condition, silk slightly corroded, fringe damage.
