Depictions of the ‘sacred’ duck Hintha (or Hamsa) are greatly venerated within the religious tradition of Burma. Originally, the duck was the mythical 'mount' of the creator god Brahma in Indian Hinduism. Over the course of time and the eventful history of Burma, however, it was co-opted into the Burmese Buddhist popular belief.
The present sacred duck Hintha is made of bronze, executed with ‘waste mould’ casting and finely engraved. It has an ornamental chain on its chest and a long, curved projection from the beak (its tongue?), from which a bell hangs.
This charming, old piece stands on a round pedestal that was cast with it and was probably the crest of a ceremonial object.
18th/19th century; H: 16 cm (bronze figure without the pedestal), L: 16 cm. (ME)
Provenance: German Private Collection.
