Swat Valley, northern Pakistan: A chair in typical form.

Swat Valley, northern Pakistan: A chair in typical form. - Mimoevropské a domorodé umění

A chair with low seat (H: c. 16 cm), in the typical style of the Swat Valley region in northern Pakistan. With high, straight and richly decorated back rest.
The constituent elements are made of hard wood, are partly decoratively turned and simply fitted together with the struts of the seat – without nails!
The seat consists of tightly plaited leather bands. The upper section of the chair is held together by means of leather straps, which at the same time help stabilising the back rest.
The front sides of the upper parts are richly adorned with deep chip-carving decorations in relief: volutes of leafy tendrils cover the sides, whilst the back rest features a large round ‘flower’ with leaves. Originally, the present ‘Swat char’ was entirely dyed black. Now it clearly shows very good, old usage patina (colour scuffed). Apart from a few torn leather straps in the seat, the piece is otherwise in perfect condition. First third of the 20th century; H: 73 cm (in total), W: 49 cm; seat: 36 cm x 38 cm.

Provenance: Alexander Posch Collection, Graz (for a more detailed explanation see cat. no. 199). (ME)
